As KSU has grown and as instructional costs have risen, the percentage of course sections taught by part-time faculty members has increased. Part-Time faculty teach in critical curricular areas such as general education courses and required courses in major programs. Since part-time faculty members are typically employed in other jobs, often have family responsibilities, teach at irregular hours, and receive small salaries for their part-time teaching, they might lack the opportunity to engage in the kinds of professional development to ensure a strong academic course experience for students.
Factors important for the success of part-time faculty include:
orienting the part-time faculty member to the institution and department
adequate training in teaching and classroom management skills
developing a sense of belongingness to the department,
ongoing professional development, and recognition for quality work.
This workshop will provide strategies to ensure success of your part-time faculty.
