This workshop will focus on students with particular needs in advising, including: students with substance use/abuse issues; those with personality disorders or difficult personality issues; and those with social skills deficits or social anxiety. The focus will be on identifying these students, discussing how these issues impact advising and what the advisor can do to help these students, and explaining when it may be necessary to refer the student for help elsewhere, including Career and Counseling Services.

Learning Outcomes: Upon completion of the workshop, participants will:
¥ Identify students with substance use/abuse issues, difficult personality issues, and/or social skills deficits or social anxiety
¥ Determine how these issues affect advising and describe ways in which the advisor can help the student
