Regardless of the content we teach, we all deal with gender issues in our courses. If students perceive that a course is inhospitable for them because of their gender identity, they will feel hindered in their ability to speak with confidence and authority, which in turn affects their learning and retention. This seminar will help you understand some of the factors that can create a chilly classroom climate, including language, content and process. In particular, we will address gender as a controversial topic to teach, strategies to avoid tokenism, and inclusive teaching for students who identify beyond the gender binary.
