This workshop is for Deans, Chairs and other University Administrators. National data indicates that academic bullying happens more often than we would like to admit, and can be relentless, resulting in stress, burnout, poor teaching quality, and decreased productivity for its victims. Institutions with high levels of academic bullying may find it difficult to attract and retain new faculty members. In this workshop, we will examine the existing research on academic and workplace bullying in order to understand the various forms of incivility, bullying, and mobbing, and to learn to recognize their symptoms. Representatives from Legal Affairs and Faculty Affairs will also be present to help chairs and directors brainstorm strategies to create more welcoming cultures, at both the individual and institutional level, and to deal effectively with situations as soon as they arise.
