Academic freedom is essential to higher education and its purpose is to promote free search for truth and its free exposition. Academic freedom applies both to teaching and research. Freedom in teaching protects the rights of the teacher in teaching and of the student to freedom in learning. Freedom in research is fundamental to advancement of truth. Academic freedom however carries with it duties and responsibilities correlative with its rights. Academic freedom and responsibility have long been a topic for public concern and debate. This workshop will discuss what academic freedom is and what it is not.
