Though they don’t occur frequently, it is likely that a department chair will have to deal with some emergencies that impact the department. There are physical and human emergencies. Examples of physical emergencies might include bad weather or damage to the classroom building that result in a cancelling of classes. Human emergencies can involve a faculty member. Faculty emergencies might include a severe accident or physical/psychological illnesses that render the faculty member unable to continue his/her classes. There is also the situation where a faculty member feels that a student is a danger to him/herself or others in the class. This workshop will provide strategies for handling these emergencies effectively with minimal disruption to the class experience.
