The Director of CETL, Dr. Michele DiPietro, and the Graduate College Dean, Dr. Mike Dishman, will welcome graduate students to CETL’s 2018 Fall Graduate Teaching Orientation. This annual, full-day orientation introduces graduate students to fundamental principles of teaching and learning. This event is also an opportunity for graduate students to meet one another and to realize the many ways KSU supports them as teachers.

Several studies point out that graduate student teaching assistants have a significant impact on undergraduate learning and student retention ((Bettinger, Long, & Taylor, 2016, Myers, et al. 2012; El-Ghoroury, 2012). Graduate students’ enthusiasm for their discipline affects student learning. One study suggests that Undergraduates who take an introductory course taught by a graduate student are much more likely to major in that subject than those who took the same course from a full-time faculty member (Bettinger, Long, & Taylor).

Each semester, CETL offers a one-credit, online course GRAD 9001/INCM 9605 College and University Teaching. This course introduces students to effective pedagogical skills and is designed to prepare Graduate Teaching Assistants for their duties. Topics include understanding how students learn, creating active learning environments, using formative and summative assessments, grading, handling problematic student behavior, responding to student diversity, designing courses and syllabi, and creating teaching philosophies.
