This day-long orientation will provide graduate students with the tools to begin teaching. Topics to be covered include the basics of being a GTA, active learning strategies, understanding students, and course management.
In this session, we examine designing a course (e.g., backward design, integrated course design) and writing a syllabus (e.g., learning objectives, policies, the role of the syllabus in the classroom).
In this session, we discuss creating formative and summative assessments, creating measurable learning objectives that are aligned with assessments, creating grading rubrics, and principles of effective grading.
In this session, we discuss eliciting effective participation in class discussions, managing problematic discussions, assessing class discussions, and teaching using case studies and problem-based learning.
