If you are a KSU part-time instructor wishing to energize your teaching and to take it to the next level, this two-day program is for you!

In this Teaching Academy, you will be introduced to research on student learning, information processing and skill development, and to teaching strategies tailored to foster deep lasting learning in your students. Rather than simply listening to presenters, the sessions will be very interactive, and they will be time during the two days dedicated to apply the theory to your own courses.

Some of the topics discussed will include:

- principles of learning

- course design

- learning-centered instructional strategies

- assessments that measure and extend learning

- conflict management in the classroom

- motivating students

- academic integrity

- responding to student diversity

Part-Time faculty many times wear several hats. There is family, other means of employment, personal issues, and, yes, actually teaching. This two hour workshop will focus on personal time management, balancing competing interests, attending to family, and leaving a bit of time for the self.

This two hour workshop will focus upon ways to facilitate learning and how to structure a class and teaching approaches. Topics to be covered are course planning, organization, structuring the classroom environment, and classroom management. Different methods of teaching will also be covered, e.g., lecture, interactive discussion, multimedia, and in-class group work.

As KSU has grown and as instructional costs have risen, the percentage of course sections taught by part-time faculty members has increased. Part-Time faculty teach in critical curricular areas such as general education courses and required courses in major programs. Since part-time faculty members are typically employed in other jobs, often have family responsibilities, teach at irregular hours, and receive small salaries for their part-time teaching, they might lack the opportunity to engage in the kinds of professional development to ensure a strong academic course experience for students.
